Essay / Research Paper Abstract
5 pages in length. Set in 1918 Ireland, William Trevor's "Fools of Fortune" is a dramatically moving story of young love, insofar as the ongoing Anglo-Irish fighting serves as a conduit between and among three generations of the same family. The author is quite successful at combining such elements as political intrigue, love and self-exile as they relate to the less obvious element of human existence amidst overwhelming strife. The overall point of Trevor's story is twofold: to question the reason for sociopolitical conflict and to demonstrate how love can flourish even in the worst
conditions. No additional sources cited.

protagonist Quinton to abandon his overwhelming quest for vengeance upon his familys destroyer; however, he is too swept up in seeking revenge for anything to overshadow his pursuit. "I
wish that somehow you might have shared my childhood, for I would love to remember you in the scarlet drawing room, so fragrant in summer with the scent of roses,
warmed in winter by the wood Tim Paddy gathered. Arithmetic and grammar books were laid out every morning on an oval table, red ink in one glass, black in
the other" (Trevor PG). One might readily surmise that Trevors tale of love and sociopolitical struggle would not have existed without the
