have hardly imagined. But although the works are recognizable, the man who created them remains very much shrouded in mystery. He was believed to have been born in
the working-class village of Stratford-on-Avon in 1564 to illiterate parents. The educational system in this enclave was rudimentary at best, and the education of the man who would write
the most eloquent prose in the history of the English language was typical of his contemporaries. It was undistinguished and it is believed Shakespeares formal education ended at age
thirteen, when he entered the workplace to assist his financially struggling father, John (Honan 60). There was nothing aristocratic about the Shakespeare family, and they were firmly ensconced within
the "middle-class Stratfordian" society (Quennell 330). During the Elizabethan era, status (or lack thereof) was determined at birth, and the rigid class system made it virtually impossible to improve
ones position on the social ladder. Shakespeare is believed to have become a schoolmaster to support his family, and continued to
teach intermittently following his marriage to Anne Hathaway in 1582. The following year, his eldest daughter Susanna was born, followed by the birth of twins Judith and Hamnet, who
died during infancy. Shakespeare enjoyed a very close relationship with Susanna, although according to biographer Park R. Honan, "Had Shakespeare been a conventional father he would not have desired
that she should read many books, or wished her to be unlike most other women of the Stratford gentry" (90). While there has been no conclusive evidence, it is
widely believed that William Shakespeare and his family were Roman Catholics, and that when his beloved daughter Susanna married the devout Anglican physician John Hall in 1607, this may have
