that are difficult to articulate but nonetheless perfectly understood by the heart. The principal theme connecting the stories into a coherent whole is simply life, in all its various aspects.
Included within Heyens perspective on life is the inevitability of death. In Heyens skillful hands, death is viewed not so much something to be feared, but rather as simply another
aspect of lifes many mysteries. In one of the first stories in the collection, "The Darkest Place," the narrator comes upon a dog torturing a treed raccoon. The narrator
is concerned and wants to stop the cruelty as the dog kills simply for the joy of killing. A couple comes along who informs the narrator that this has been
going on for three days. The dog finally manages to kill the raccoon and the ordeal is over. Heyen writes of the couple, "She kissed him widely again and
again on his neck and face...The three days were over for them now" (19). The couples reaction to viewing life is to have sex--an act that creates life. In this
story, Heyen plants the seed of the idea that it is all connected -- life and death -- all part of the same circle. In "The Word," Heyen pictures a
man who goes to England on holiday, rather than accompany his family on a trip to the beach. While in Europe, the man is struck by the history of the
places he visits. Time seems to become flexible as he views ancient sites. As he gazes at a grave marker, "the new headstones marble and incised letters were overgrown, and
the womans grave had been here for centuries..." (86). The protagonist of this story has another epiphany when he gets home and is contemplating the good life he has
