the standard notions of morality. In this famous tale, a group of boys are being evacuated from war-ravaged England when their plane crashes, leaving them stranded on a tropical island
without a surviving adult. Ralph becomes the leader of the boys, with his conch shell as a symbol of his authority. Jack leads the boys charged with hunting. Aligned with
Ralph, who tries to maintain some semblance of order, is Piggy, the most intellectual of the boys, and Simon, the most spiritual. Golding builds a theologically oriented theme around Simon
that is intriguing and underscores the tale of moral dissolution. However, while similarities can be drawn between Simon and Christ, an examination of the narrative reveals that this analogy can
only be carried so far, as Simon is both Christ-like and the antithesis of Christ. As the story progresses, it quickly develops that there are two camps of boys:
those boys that follow Ralph and those who follow Jack and are ready to give in to savagery. As time passes, the boys become more vicious in their hunt.
The ultimate hunt, which is an attack on a sow is more vicious and cruel than previous pig hunts. Previously, the boys hunted for food. The sow has piglets and,
thus, can also be seen as representing motherhood and domesticity. From this point on the boys become increasingly more primitive. It is clear that the destructiveness of Jack has
won out over the efforts of Ralph to maintain some semblance of order and civility. Since Jack is in power, it is inevitable that both Simon and Piggy are
