Meet the Bundren family -- another group in William Faulkners dysfunctional cast of characters. A family of poor white farmers living in southern Yoknapatawpha County, they weather all manner of
personal trials in their journey to bury their dead matriarch, Addie, among her people. As I Lay Dying is a study in contradiction -- each narrative given in
the novel is isolated and detached from the others, yet taken as a whole, the separate narratives form a complete -- if somewhat disjointed -- and whole picture. This is
indicative of the novel and its text -- the Bundren family can be assumed to be a whole part, but each family member seems to function separately from the others.
There is no family unity; no melding of the individuals. Just as the structural form of the novel is one of fragmented pieces making up a whole, the Bundren family
functions in much the same way. Any togetherness they experience is primarily due to the obstacles which befall them in their journey to bury Addie. Prior to her death, there
was little cooperation or family unity. The family isnt bonded by love, but by a pride that pushes them to band together in the face of danger, even if they
have little respect for each other as people. This family, in the end, only gives a surface appearance of going beyond their individual isolation from one another, when in fact,
the frustrations they experience only serve to drive them each farther apart. This novel is a story told in a stream-of-conscious fashion by fifteen different speakers throughout the novel.
