an attempt to create a saga of his own, Faulkner invented a host of characters typical of the historical growth and subsequent decadence of his beloved South. As a
result, for his lifetime of literary achievements, in1949 he won the coveted Nobel Laureate in Literature for his powerful and artistically unique contribution to the modern American novel. This essay
examines one of his most critically acclaimed, and twisted short stories, A Rose for Emily, while analyzing both the plot and his remarkably vivid characterizations.
This is truly one of the most frequently anthologized stories by Faulkner -- this shocking story of Emily Grierson. In it the author weaves a tale steeped
in mystery and perversity, and develops characters that seem almost palpable. He relates the story of an aging spinster in Jefferson, whose death and funeral ultimately draw the attention
of the entire town: "...the men through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument, the women mostly out of curiosity to see the inside of her house, which
no one save an old manservant -- a combined gardener and cook -- had seen in at least ten years" (Faulkner). To the outside world, it might
have appeared that Miss Emily grew up in the lap of luxury. However, it was a lonely existence because her father ruled Emilys life with an iron fist, (typical
