his characters do that for him. For example, in a number of his prose Faulkner characters can readily be seen to live in the past -- thus, forgetting or
freezing time -- and some of them even appear to have no concept of the future - thereby, giving a more literal meaning to the phrase -- "living in the
moment". In order to more fully grasp Faulkners unique time concept two of his most celebrated works will be scrutinized: A Rose for Emily and The Sound and the
Fury. Both bodies of work reveal ways in which time represents a different entity to different characters. This comparative essay will attempt to delve into Faulkners mind and
root out his perceptions of time. Virtually every character in both stories has his own very specific interpretation of time. In A
Rose for Emily the end of the American Civil War also signified the end of the Old Souths era of greatness. However, much of the townspeople either mourned
the passage of that more beneficent time, or staunchly refused to believe that things had changed at all. People in the South, (as depicted in many of Faulkners stories)
appeared to have a definite problem in separating fact from fantasy -- and a patent refusal to accept national transformations (such as integration) -- even though quite obviously their good
old days of slavery were gone forever. As a rule they tended to keep their precious memories close-at-hand in a continued and pathetic attempt to maintain the glory of
