well be expected, most, if not all, of those signers held a position as a founding father and represented the nation and its ideals from the very beginning, thus making
them very important individuals. One of those individuals was William Ellery. The following paper examines the life and work of William Ellery. William Ellery: Founding Father
William Ellery, born in 1727, "attended Harvard College and graduated at the age of 15. He searched for the right career for many years, worked
as merchant, then a collector of customs, and later as the Clerk of the Rhode Island General Assembly" (Signers of the Declaration of Independence, 2009). One can see from this
simple biography that his years of life prior to the signing of the Declaration of Independence were spent essentially gaining a wide array of experiences, and thus perhaps symbolizing the
nation itself in his diversity. And, interestingly enough, it was not until he was 43 that he began to practice law, wherein he was noticed and brought in to sign
in the place of Samuel Ward who was dead (Signers of the Declaration of Independence, 2009). As a founding father he became
involved in political and national concerns and in one position, given him by George Washington, he found himself "as customs collector for the Newport district" where he came in
contact with the DeWolf family, a family that was immersed in the slave trade (American Civil War, 2009). "1799 saw Ellery order the DeWolfs schooner, the Lucy, auctioned off as
