England entailed important changes -- well known to historians -- in the ways these people organized their lives, but it also involved fundamental reorganizations -- less well-known to historians --
in the regions plant and animal communities" (vii). Cronon book examines the migration of English colonists to New England between the years 1620 and 1800, and draws distinct parallels
between the relationship of the Europeans and the Native American settlers, and its consequences on the landscape. The changes Cronon chronicles, however, were not simply ecological, but also technological.
The indigenous population of northern New England lived simply off the land through hunting and fishing, while those who settled in southern
New England relied upon agriculture for supplying up to two-thirds of their diet (42). As a result, there needed to be a produce several crops during a growing season.
Small and controlled forest fires enabled the European colonists to clear land for agricultural expansion, as well as to protect animals and crops from the bitter northern winters.
Another change came in the form of domesticating once-wild animals, who had survived by eating crops. The beaver population was practically non-existent, which meant that the dams these industrious
animals built were also. Without dams, several low-lying regions became susceptible to flooding, which escalation of soil erosion. These changes prompted a dramatic shift in the local ecosystems.
Furthermore, the Europeans introduced new types of livestock which were not native to the region. They brought with them disease that threatened to annihilate entire villages as well
