An example is that the mere activity of walking is expressed by the author as follows: "...the body is tilted slightly forward from the basic standing position and the weight thrown on the ball of the foot, while the other thigh is lifted and the leg and opposite arm are swung forward..." (Williams, 1963, p.59). This is just one example of the descriptive nature of the authors material. Indeed, it is easy to see how this author embraces a sense of place but also melds common elements of human existence into the works. On some level, a sense of place can become more than just something associated with one locale. After all, Paterson is not so different from anywhere else. On some level, it is unique and this, to an extent, is the purpose of the writings, but at the same time, Williams (1963) writes about things that denote a common experience amongst many people. He writes: "Signs everywhere of birds nesting, while in the air, slow, a crow zigzags with heavy wings before the wasp-thrusts of smaller birds circling about him that dive from above stabbing for his eyes" (Williams, 1963, p.61). Perhaps this is something he observed and it is something that may be thought peculiar to his Paterson experience, but it is something that many people around the world experience everyday. Within the observation of his experience of place come common elements. And while it may be true that the author provides commonalities to which many can relate, he does bring specific memories forth. For example, in his description of a specific area of the park, he writes: "oaks, choke-cherry, dogwoods, while and green, iron-wood: humped roots matted into the shallow soil-mostly gone: rock out-croppings polished by the feet of the picknickers: sweetbread ...
