later in the "new world." Bradfords "Of Plymouth Plantation" provides one of the most detailed accounts of the early settlement in the new world and of the now famous
voyage of the pilgrims to Plymouth, Massachusetts. His authorship reflected the cultural, historical and philosophical influences that shaped the pilgrim perspective, and defined early Puritanism that would shape the
early settlements in the Americas. Bradfords memoir, which relates his personal history and the history of the pilgrim settlers, is defined by a
culture shaped by religious forces. Bradford and the separatists who relocated to Holland did so because of distinct religious opposition to the Church of England. In fact, Bradfords
writing reflected a focus on the spread of religious changes in the past and the desire to create a utopian ideal by removing from England and living a religious life
outside of the increasing liberal English church. Bradfords writing focused on the will of God and the progression of events that lead to the move out of England,
which had in Bradfords mind been transformed by negative forces. Bradfords introduction states: "It is well known unto the godly and judicious, how ever since the first breaking out of
the light of the gospel in our honorable nation of England...what wars and oppositions ever since, Satan hath raised, maintained and continued against the Saints" (Bradford, 1650). In this one
can see that he essentially lays down the history of the pilgrims in a way that speaks of their incredible righteousness and how they must continue to fight for their
