William Blake lived in Europe during the Industrial Revolution, that time in which tremendous scientific, social, economic, agricultural, intellectual, and political impacts would be felt around the world. Life
in London during the time of the notable poet William Blake was a time of many socioeconomic injustices. These injustices would impact Blake just as they impacted others of
the less fortunate classes of the great city. Many of William Blakes poems and songs, in fact can be considered a form of social protest against the conditions which
he experienced as a child. Even in his adult life, in fact, he found himself isolated from London society by his work as a small tradesman and printer.
Blake was even further confined by his extreme poverty. Blakes most popular work was published as "Songs of Innocence" and "Songs
of Experience". That Blake composed songs of social protest is not surprising given the dire circumstances in which he existed and given his natural talent for music. The
Industrial Revolution was a time in which much of the world was making the quick transition from a subsistence pattern which involved primarily agricultural pursuits to one which depended almost
solely on complex machinery. The simpler hand tools which had been so much a part of the continents history were quickly replaced with mechanization and automation.
There were other great changes during this time period as well. The rise of nationalism following the Congress of Vienna in 1815, for example, had
a particular weighty impact on the political and ideological landscape of Europe, and indeed the rest of the world. European governmental evolution in the previous century was largely related
