the lives of a father and his daughter as they adjust to this new land. It is not necessarily a story with a clear plot in terms of presenting us
with one conflict that needs to be resolved, but rather offers the reader a look at the people and the times that were 17th century Quebec. The following paper examines
some of the characters and the small conflicts that take place in the novel. Shadows on the Rock The two primary characters in the story are Auclair and his
12-year old daughter Cecile. Auclair has recently been widowed and he and his daughter must make a new life for themselves without her. Auclair is something of philosopher and also
an apothecary so he is a necessary part of the small community in which they live. He is, however, a man who feels somewhat lost and alone on the rock
that is Quebec. He misses something of his old way of life, or his homeland. We see this in the beginning as he stands on a cliff watching the last
of the ships leave the area: "This was October; not a sail would come up that wide waterway before next July. No supplies; not a cask of wine or a
sack of flour, no gunpowder, or leather, or cloth, or iron tools" (Cather). He would see, "Not a letter, even -- no news of what went on at home. There
might be new wars, floods, conflagrations, epidemics, but the colonists would never know of them until next summer" (Cather). In this we see that he is feeling something of isolation
and loneliness. He is faced with making a new life for himself and his daughter, and with is innate philosophical tendencies, will not face things simply but will clearly examine
