II. UNITY WITH LAND An immediate connection Cather puts forth is the inextricable relationship Rosicky has with the land, a piece of earth he looks at as much more than merely that; in fact, it comes to represent the meaning behind and extension of Rosickys character, an association he sees as evidence of his ability to stand strong against lifes struggles while at the same time take credit when it came to prosper in the good times. Cather is instrumental in demonstrating this inherent strength of constitution and will for survival, even in the face of despair and disappointment. Rosicky represents the plight of many and the durability of all; indeed, he shows the reader how an unworldly yet insightful man can still maintain his own presence, no matter the uncertainty that lives within his heart. The very act of carving out a new life in an unfamiliar territory casts its share of fear and anxiety, however, this uncertainty is not based in whether or not he is capable of working the land but that of external dangers of "the eyes of a dishonest and craftyman, of a scheming and rapacious woman" (Cather 620).
