character of Antonia as he did. Discussion The connection of Antonia with the earth begins immediately. When she first appears, Jim describes her as a sort of spirit of the forest. He says that her eyes were "big and warm and full of light, like the sun shining on brown pools in the wood" (Cather, 2008). Her cheeks have a "glow of rich, dark color" and her hair is wild and curly (Cather 32). The description ties her to nature from the first moment she is introduced, and the use of words like "light," "rich," "dark," "curly" and "wild" all suggest something more than a human child. A few moments after they meet, Antonia takes Jims hand and they run "up the steep drawside" until they reach level ground; there they see gold tree tops in the distance (Cather 32). They run toward them until they reach a place called Squaw Creek, where the land drops so steeply that the children are above the trees (Cather). They stand looking at the bushes and trees in the ravine, standing in a wind so strong Jim has to hold onto his hat (Cather). But Antonia "seemed to like it" (Cather 25). They sit down in the grass and Antonia begins to ask Jim to tell her the English names of things; she is quick and alert and seems very much a part of the landscape: "We sat down and made a nest in the long red grass" (Cather 25). Thus Antonia is identified with the colors and experiences of nature from the very beginning. The conflation of Antonia with nature is repeated again and again. In one touching scene, she and Jim are sitting in the grass watching the rabbits playing when they notice that the insects are dead, except one. ...
