was a shortage. It is a rather curious fact considering that a penny is worth very little today. Some people think that the penny should be obsolete. Indeed, many stores
have a little penny tray where people can place a penny or two, or take one or two if they need it for a purchase. The use of coinage appears
primitive today. Many centuries ago, there was the idea of bartering and in fact money came about first as stones, or coinage and eventually, Asian nations would create paper money.
It was an idea that went west and currency was created with the idea that gold would back it up. Just as a debit card receipt proves that one has
money in the bank, paper currency is valid but it is effectively a receipt for something else. The future may hold the idea of a cashless society. With new
technology and current trends of making purchases online, paying bills automatically too and automatic deposits from employers, there are some people who do not even see their cash. It is
quite possible to have paychecks automatically put into a checking account, and then use a debit card or checks for all purchases. It does become inconvenient to for example have
to take out the debit card for a quart of milk, but some people live this way. It also creates a paper trail or receipts which some people like. They
are able to track their purchases without having to save receipts. Everything they buy will be contained on their bank statements at the end of the month. Lyons (2002) wrote
