There are a number of theorists which have undertaken work that indicates employees will be more committed to an employer and are likely to be both more productive and prone to innovation when they work in a high trust environment. In the 1950s Douglas McGregor described his two theories, theory X and Theory Y. Theory X drew on Taylorism and assumed that man was inherently lazy, lacked ambition and motivation and was disinterested in organizational goals, (Huczyniski and Buchanan, 2003). The general perception of scientific management is that it isolates workers and treats them as parts of a machine, therefore it creates a low trust environment due to the resentment and lack of motivation that this creates. However, this is a very limited view of Taylorism, as this efficient method of work was originally perceived by Taylor as facilitating teamwork, as he stated that the system should be used with an attitude of hearty co-operation (Taylor, 1998). However, this did not occur and it may be argued that the teams that were created did not have the attributes of self management and self policing, due to the low trust environment. Therefore the teams that were put together under this approach have not resulted in higher levels of smarter and harder work, even if they did create efficiency. It may also be argued that the teams where managed differently to those seen in modern organizations.
