given by society. The classifications used may be wide ranging such as class, race, gender , religion or even sexual preference. The cause is often prejudice which is caused by
ignorance and fear. It has been argued that to rectify the current injustices that occur as a result of prejudice that polices of positive discrimination should be put into place.
For example, favouring minorities over majorities, even where they are not the most skilled or best suited to the job, or do not fulfil the correct criteria for the normal
test. This is a controversial move as it becomes an inverse from of discrimination, which individuals may see as unfair and against basic rules of a meritocracy. There are
augments for and against the use of positive discrimination. Those who argue that positive discrimination is one way of creating a fairer society look to the patters which are already
in place. There are many minorities that are discriminated against. Often the discrimination is not overt and many times may not even be undertaken consciously. Many of the disadvantages are
faced then become due to social constructs and the way that capital culture will favours the status quo (Bourdieu, 1984). This maybe anything form racial minorities not going into the
police force, women not gaining senior management positions and even working class children not going to university. Those in the minorities are discouraged and believe they cannot achieve their goal,
