physical shops in the future due to the lack of demand. However, although this may be argued in theory we can also argue there are many reasons why bricks and
mortar shops will still be needed. E-commerce is defined by the American Heritage Dictionary (2000), as "Commerce that is transacted electronically, as over the Internet". This indicates that e-commerce
is much wider than simply the internet, but that this is a prime example. This definition is very narrow if arguing that e-commerce could totally take over we need to
expand on this. The dictionary of computing has a fuller explanation; "The conducting of business communication and transactions over networks and through computers. As most restrictively defined, electronic commerce is
the buying and selling of goods and services, and the transfer of funds, through digital communications. However EC [electronic commerce] also includes all inter-company and intra-company functions (such as marketing,
finance, manufacturing, selling, and negotiation) that enable commerce and use electronic mail, EDI, file transfer, fax, video conferencing, workflow, or interaction with a remote computer. Electronic commerce also includes buying
and selling over the World-Wide Web and the Internet, electronic funds transfer, smart cards, digital cash (e.g. Mondex), and all other ways of doing business over digital networks" (Howe, 2001).
Therefore, e-commerce is not limited to just the internet or the world wide web but may also include a number of other
