with students in the United States. Of course, when viewing such programming, one sees that these students are often well dressed and sitting in sturdy chairs. While few think of the Internet as being inextricable with social stratification, some analysts see the Internet as actually exacerbating the class divide. Wilhelm (2000) speaks of an underclass when he evaluates the Internet skills and competence of people in the United States. A general description of a person who might be classified by Anthony Wilhelm as being immune to progress would include a variety of portraits. Generally speaking, such an individual would be in a low income bracket, and most likely belong to a minority group. The class divide has effectively rendered those on the lower end of the economic spectrum as not computer literate . When one turns on the television, there are computers everywhere and most shows. Shows with children often display computers in their rooms and many from middle class backgrounds are used to children being computer savvy, even much more than their hard-working parents. Yet, while Wilhelm does provide the negative aspects of society, and of Internet usage, he sees a glimmer of hope. Yes, there is a divide now but that does not mean that the problem cannot be corrected. Wilhelm (2000) hints that the conversations which occur online are also class-specific. There is a tendency for the net to underrepresent the voices of minorities and the voices of the poor. The individual who might fall into the underclass category is poor, of a minority background, and not in tune with the buzz of society.
