Lemmons character in the mistaken belief that hes a woman. The central conflict is between two musicians, Jerry (Jack Lemmon) and Joe (Tony Curtis), and the gangster Spats Colombo (George
Raft). The unlucky duo witnesses the St. Valentines Day Massacre in Chicago. They escape by a fluke and run for their lives, with the mob on their heels.
They shave their legs, put on wigs and dresses, and join an all-girl band on its way to a gig in Florida. They are safe for the moment
but have to continue masquerading as women. Much of the comedy of the first part of the film derives from the fact that these are two normal young men
who are surrounded by beautiful women, especially Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe), and cant do anything about it. They enjoy several days in Florida and believe theyre safe, only to have
Spats and his boys arrive at the same hotel for a sort of gangsters convention. The climax of the film occurs when Spats and his henchmen recognize Joe and
Jerry and chase them through the hotel. The two hide under a table in a banquet room, only to discover that its the very room in which the gangsters
are having their dinner. Spats has to report to his boss, Little Bonaparte (Nehemiah Persoff), that hes seen the musicians and they escaped once more. Bonaparte bellows:
"You mean you let them get away ... TWICE??" Spats is doomed. Not only has he let witnesses live, hes "gotten too big for his spats."
