environmental concerns on a number of levels. It is clear that the boar population on Mount Diablo is impacting the vegetation to a greater degree than many other herbivorous
pests indigenous to the region, including berry eating birds and white tail deer. The boars rooting habits and their ability to consume a variety and large quantity of vegetation
are inherent to the concerns presented. Other major concerns include the long term effects of erosion on the terrain and landscape and the impacts of the changing vegetation
species on indigenous herbivores. II. Wild Boar and Habitat There are two very basic elements that have impacted the movement of wild boar populations to Mount Diablo in
recent years. Wild boar generally select their habitats by evaluating the richness of the food source and the overall security of the habitat (Spitz and Janeau 423). They are
a species that will travel considerable distances to determine a safe and hearty habitat, and their population density is directly related to their ability to provide these two important elements
(Hazebroek et al 632). Contrary to populate thought, the Sus scrofa will not simply pursue habitats that provided the greatest food source; they evaluate the safety of an area in
regards to predators. The Mount Diablo area is inherently suited for the proliferation of Sus scrofa. The area, which peaks at about 3650 feet above sea level,
provides both rich vegetation and a secure environment. Though there are a number of predators for the wild boar, there are few natural predators, including mountain lions and coyotes,
