people are used to the elderly being frail and in danger. There are horrendous stories of break-ins and muggings involving the elderly. Sometimes, the women are raped. People are often
outraged by these stories. On the other hand, it seems that teens are often perpetrators and not victims. Today, particularly with the "gangsta" look and the gang mentality, there is
a fear of large groups of teenagers. Yet, it is perhaps the risky behavior that teens are engaged in that might account for the wide disparity in victimization. That is,
teens enter this dangerous subculture and are therefore more likely to be victimized. While the elderly may be easy prey, they tend to stay home a lot. Some give up
their driver licenses as their eyesight deteriorates. Others simply do not want to go out at night because they are afraid. They further tend to get up early and go
to bed also at a relatively early hour. They double lock their doors and are often suspicious. Perhaps they protect themselves better even though they can be more vulnerable. Teenagers
are testing boundaries. They try to stay out as late as possible. Some teenagers sneak out of their homes or run away for a few days. They engage in many
risky behaviors. Further, juveniles are not rational actors who look at the potential results of their actions. Rather, they act impulsively and cave to peer pressure. To a great extent,
the fact that they take greater risks, does account for their tendency to be victimized. There are other obvious notions such as the fact that elderly people do not belong
to gangs and gang violence takes many young victims. In terms of victimization, while older victims are more likely to be victims of property crimes, younger people are often the
