say that the Wright brothers were truly the first in flight is debatable. This is true even when considering that they were the first to fly in a "heavier than air" craft. This is because there are so many variables to define who exactly was the first to fly. In fact, there was some controversy over this fact at the time. Even though most Americans accept the fact that the Wright Brothers claims are iron clad-or at least do not question them-there had been much competition during the period. Further, there were various recordings of airborne travel in craft that was heavier than air. The question that lingers is, were the Wright Brothers first in flight? It should be said that during the time period that flight first arose, there was much skepticism. For example, the British Lord Kelvin, a scientist in his own right, claimed it would be impossible to accomplish the feat (Gelzer, 2005). Hence, a great many inventors were not scientists at all, but those who dabbled in these things (Gelzer, 2005). They were inventors in their own right, but their backgrounds were not exemplary. They simply all just wanted to fly. For many, it was the Wright brothers who first invented flight. Lienhard (2006) writes: "I remain content to say that the Wright brothers were first to fly, as long as we saddle their claims with enough adjectives" (p. 19). Again, there are so many variables in dubbing someone to be first in flight even when further classifying the criteria as being equated with a heavier than air craft. There were others who were trying the same thing at the time.
