only that, but prisoners are likely to return to society with a deadly disease. AIDS and HIV first emerged in prisons in 1983 and by the time 1997 would roll
around, the incidence in prisons was calculated to be six times as high as it is in the regular world (Osemene, Essien & Egbunike, 2001). AIDS spreads more quickly in
prisons and so the society should be concerned about this topic. Because HIV and AIDS is so prevalent in prisons today, it makes sense to segregate those who are infected
from those who are not. Unfortunately, sex does take place in prisons, and drugs sometimes get through as well. The likelihood of contracting HIV is likely. Some prisoners have fought
for their right to be segregated from others who have HIV (Rollins, 2002). It is an idea that makes sense. It is bad enough having to be confined for a
period of time, but AIDS is a life sentence. Segregation makes sense. Of course, in the real world, AIDS infected individuals are not segregated in society. Today, it is known
that for the most part, AIDS is not easily transmitted and usually involves sexual contact. However, in prison, there is a lot of sex taking place-inclusive of rape-- and so,
there is a greater chance of transmission. Its prevalence in prison has been supported with statistics. Day (2004) remarks in looking at a study: "It is therefore reasonable to conclude
that men and women are entering the system infected with HIV and, due to the long incubation period, are leaving prison without even knowing they are infected. Under these circumstances,
HIV is being spread unwittingly by those who make irresponsible decisions." One can see that not only are the prisoners being infected, but when they go out into the world,
