that some of the characteristics are genius, courage, knowledge, judgment and moral character (Brown 34). The author looks at founders and claims that they are great; some examples are Benjamin Franklin and George Washington (Brown 34). There are others. When delving deeper into the topic, Brown talks about the fact that trust had been "at the core of the system" (38). Brown goes on to explain how things are different today. One point is that the political system differs a great deal in that politicians plead directly to voters and also that Senators are now elected directly by the people (Brown 42). In some way, there is a sense that the evolution of the democratic system has prompted change. Clearly, there are things that never change. Despite increases in technology, there is no Internet voting. There is no direct democracy, even though many criticize the electoral college. While the political system has evolved, it did not change enough to actually destroy the integrity of the system that the founders developed. There is much that has stayed the same. The article does talk about the great men and makes reference to the fact that they are no longer with us. It implies that something is broken. Yet, the author makes the following admission: "But greatness, of course, is an exceptional phenomenon; even under the best conditions the odds must always be against it" (Brown 43). In other words, one has to wait for a great leader to emerge. In fact, it is often only in retrospect that someone is considered to be great. Many times, the greatness does not emerge for some time.
