2007 (McGeehan B3). Of course, the cost of living is higher in New York than in most parts of the country. Also, aside from it being expensive to live in
New York, the minimum wage that exists in the state is too small to live on anywhere. Someone earning $7.15 per hour really only earns $286 for a 40 hour
week which is hardly enough to contribute toward rent. Many people argue that those who work at minimum wage jobs are primarily teenagers. This may be true, but that
is because minimum wage is really not a living wage. Another point, and which is really why it should be raised is made as follows: " A minimum wage
thats increased by almost 40 percent in the past four years is actually less than it was in 1970" ("$7.15 still not enough" A20). When factoring in inflation, the minimum
wage should be higher in New York than it was proportionately 38 years ago ("$7.15 still not enough" A20). It would then, according to the Fiscal Policy Institute, need to
be closer to $9.50 per hour ("$7.15 still not enough" A20). The state could raise the minimum wage, but it seems as if there are many roadblocks. For example, a
bill that suggested raising the minimum wage by 2011 did not even get through ("$7.15 still not enough" A20). One argument against raising the minimum is that the jobs will
be lost ("$7.15 still not enough" A20). There is always the argument that small businesses simply will hire less workers or keep workers for shorter hours. There is the idea
