story lines are not real anyway. There does seem to be a mix of real life situations depicted on the television show to outrageous situations that only actors could depict.
While extreme in nature, Jerry Springer creates a show that is unlike any other. At the end of each show, as sort of a disclaimer, Jerry makes a political statement
to create the impression that ethics, above all, are what the show is all about. Of course, the truth is that the Jerry Springer television show relies on the most
egregious situations. There are situations involving incest, men cheating on their girlfriends with their own mothers, and things of that nature that usually involve the least intelligent people on the
planet. Again, most of the situations utilize actors, but in the end, a negative portrayal of people is the primary focus of attention. Women also get the burnt of the
negativity, something that also reinforces sexualized stereotypes of women. Epstein and Steinberg describe the show this way: " Indeed, it can be argued that the Jerry Springer Show has virtually
invented the new televisual school of what could be described as "cruelty realism." This new school, whose stock in trade is humiliation and gross spectacle of and by "ordinary" people,
now appears not only in globalized "constructed reality" franchises like Big Brother and Survivor (or the British Cruel Winter and Cruel Summer), but is increasingly infiltrating the range of televisual
forms..." (90). Authors have a point in that the Jerry Springer show, to its credit, is an original entity. Yet, there are people on the show who are the
