governors chair, the death penalty was reinstated. New York has effectively had capital punishment since 1995, but no executions have taken place ("NY Defenders," 2004). The situation is similar in
New Jersey as while the death penalty has been reinstated there has yet to be any executions ("N.J. Killer," 2004). Similar situations exist throughout the nation and throughout the
world; the death penalty has been implemented, then repealed, and sometimes put back into action. Some nations around the world think that the death penalty is unnecessary and heinous while
other nations actually implement brutal forms of torture and death. In the United Stats, the death penalty is administered in a humane fashion for the purposes of deterrence, social control
and retribution. The death penalty has some supporters but a good amount of people oppose this final punishment. In fact, because there is no greater punishment than to take a
human beings life, many are afraid to allow it. To some, there is a religious conflict and to others, the primary problem is uncertainty. They may agree that the penalty
should be implemented for the worst offenders but should it be in place for those who might be innocent? Juries are fallible and that is a problem. At the same
time, for a host of reasons, the death penalty should stay. It is a punishment that is sorely needed in a society that is out of control. People are afraid
to walk the streets at night. There are many criminals who do not hesitate to kill. In fact, they would take many lives if they could get away with it
