justice system serves society well. But of course, there are problems. There are the numerous reports that the system is flawed and includes institutional racism. There is also the idea
that while laws are good, mandatory minimum laws that do not allow judges to use their judgment is detrimental. First, in exploring this problem, it pays to look at the
system. What is the criminal justice system exactly and what are its subsystems? Within criminal justice are three related components such as law enforcement, corrections and the courts (Glover
92). Federal, state, county, municipal, and campus police forces, are entities which comprise what criminal justice scholars call the "first arm" of the criminal system (92). Law enforcement has in
fact evolved into a complex science, and the opportunity to specialize in tasks other than street patrol has increased a great deal (92). This has likely attracted individuals who are
interested in police work but do not see themselves as beat cops. Many federal law enforcement jobs are found under the heading of the United States Department of Justice
(Glover 92). The U.S. Marshalls, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Drug Enforcement Agency are some of the more recognizable branches (92). The courts, which is the second arm
of the criminal justice system embraces many white collar opportunities and there are for example positions as district attorneys or prosecutors (92). Of course, each requires a law degree.
