Jimmy Smits is a presidential hopeful who is not graced in the etiquette needed to win the office. However, his agenda is education. This fictitious character proposes that the school
year be extended to match what other nations have. In summary, the American educational system is lacking and is not competitive with other nations that have longer school years and
broader content. Essentially, America has been dumbed down. However, while this may be the case, the American people do not want to hear such rhetoric. Rather, the United States
of America is an affluent and arrogant nation that appears to embrace the status quo with pride. The point of the West Wing anecdote is that other countries are
educating their children better. In Japan, for example, students are in school 240 days per year, which translates to 60 more days than what American high school students are used
to (Johnson & Johnson, 1996). Obviously, with so much schooling in such a competitive environment, Japanese high school students have little free time. Dating is discouraged and there is much
attention to home work and reading (1996). There is also no drug epidemic in Japan (1996). By contrast, American high school students are sexualized by society and begin dating and
having sexual relations early. There are drug problems in many schools as well. Might this be attributable to the fact that high school students have too much free time on
their hands? While it seems perhaps too simple, many believe this to be true and in fact ideas like midnight basketball and other wholesome activities have cropped up. How can
