students who live on college campuses must have them too. There are various requirements but there is also a movement against these inoculations. Some parents fear that the shots are poisoning the children, a fear that has been fostered by numerous books as well as accusations against the pharmaceutical industry. Some parents obtain exemptions for their children to attend school while others choose to home school instead. One book called A Shot in the Dark truly frightened parents. Stories in the volume included one baby who was doing fine right up until her first DPT shot (Coulter and Fisher 67). The book does focus on pertussis as a dangerous inclusion in the three part vaccine but today, there are many tales about MMR vaccines and its link to autism. Stories abound. Yet, for every story about vaccine injury, there are countless children who have been successfully vaccinated with no ill effects. Yes, many times there are slight side effects but the protection gained from the vaccine is worth the temporary discomfort. Certain diseases associated with inoculation have dissipated and some argue that the vaccines should no longer be required. This is a false assumption. Largely because parents do not get needed vaccines for their children, there are older diseases cropping up again. There have been whopping cough outbreaks for example in pockets of the country. There have been many lawsuits waged related to the administration of the MMR vaccine and the manifestation of autism. Yet, there is no real proof that this is the case. Why are parents so concerned about the MMR link to autism? Critics of those who claim a link believe that timing is the reason for the misconception. That is, autism is usually recognized around the same time as the MMR vaccine is administered. ...
