over our bodies relates to its specific cellular and molecular structure and method of attack. These all serve to complicate treatment substantially. The result is that so far researchers have been unable to find a cure for the disease. More fortunately, however, numerous treatments have been developed that are in the experimental stages and several drugs have been used successfully to at least temporarily prolong the lives of persons infected with AIDS (Center for Disease Control, 2007). Without treatment patients typically succumb to death within a few months to a few years after the virus attack on the human system. The difficulty that has been encountered in trying to find a cure for AIDS is disturbing given the toll AIDS is currently taking on our population. In 2004 the HIV virus, the causative agent in AIDS, was believed to already infect some forty million people (Pike, 2007). Pike (2007), however, points out that expanded HIV testing could result in an increase in diagnoses of HIV/AIDS by 90,000! The speed with which AIDS has spread from one region to another is, in itself, a testament to the formidable cellular and molecular makeup of the HIV virus. Some say that AIDS cases have reached epidemic proportion. One of the fortunate aspects of the constantly increasing number of AIDS cases is that AIDS research is intensifying. Consequently a diversity of approaches are being employed to try and counteract the ravages of the disease on the human body and to both better and lengthen the quality of life of those inflicted with this disease. Each of these approaches takes into account the cellular and even the molecular structure of the HIV pathogen and otherwise uses the knowledge that we have ...
