can be traced back to some type of internal failure. There have been many failures large and small; Parmalat, Enron and Polypeck are a few examples, in all cases there
was dishonesty was seen by the media as being key to the failure, but if we look at this in more detail with reference to a specific company it may
be argued that the dishonesty was a symptom and possibly a catalyst, bit alone it was not the cause. In this paper
we will look at one well known case Baring Bank, the failure is often seen as the fault of Nick Leeson, a rouge trader who acted without authorisation, the
failure was far more complex that this and it is by looking at the way the company failed that the real cause can be seen. Barings is still trading today,
but this is due to a take over after the Bank of England refused to save the bank stating that this was beyond the scope of its role as lender
of last resort. To consider why Barings Bank failed we need to look at the research on why businesses fail. A study
by Moulton (et al, 1996) looked to identify the reasons for business failure. This study compared seventy three companies that had been through bankruptcy with seventy three that had not
in order to identify the patterns and root causes of bankruptcy. The factors here included the issues such as environment stress, however this alone was not deemed to be
sufficient otherwise all companies in some industries would fail, whereas in reality only weaker businesses fail and the causes of the failure are the weaknesses. Therefore the study was looking
