we were to pose the question "Why are Americans experiencing this problem more so than the rest of the world?" there would likely be a diversity of answers. In
reality the rest of the world isnt immune to obesity. The National Institutes of Health (2010) asserts that millions of Americans are people around the world could be classified
as either obese or overweight. The sad fact is, however, that Americans are more likely to have this problem than other nationalities.
One of the first questions that might come to mind when considering this problems is "What is obesity?". The NIH (2010) is careful to clarify that there
is a distinct difference between being overweight and being obese. While an individual can be overweight due to factors ranging from muscle weight to water retention (NIH, 2010).
Even bone structure can result in an individual being heavier than another of approximately the same physical size. The term "obese", however, is used to categorize those that are
heavier because of too much body fat (NIH, 2010). The methodology most normally used to define obesity is based on an individuals height
verses their weight. The calculation of Body Mass Index (BMI), for example, is simply a means of describing weight as it relates to height. Obviously, a taller individual
could reasonably be expected to weigh more than a shorter individual. Using this information an Ideal Body Weight (IBW) is determined and the percentage the individual weighs in above
