competitive economy, some firms offer tuition reimbursement along with a compensation package. Of course, tuition reimbursement usually comes with rules. That is, the coursework must be relevant to the job.
Someone who is a waitress for example may go to culinary school, but an employer may not want to pay her tuition at nursing school. If the education must be
relevant, that is fair. In most cases, career changers do not necessarily look for employment only to secure tuition reimbursement. In fact, many employees who take advantage of the offering
do look for classes in their own field, something that ends up benefiting the company. Indeed, firms should for the most part allow for the tuition reimbursement benefit. Today, many
employers do and this it to the tune of about $10 billion per year (Johnson, 2005, p.30). The money is not frivolously spent. It is not a perk that is
personal as might extra vacation days be, or something along the lines of day care. The company is paid back in intangible returns. For example, one survey proves that these
programs have an observable outcome in terms of reliability and quality of the employees work (Johnson, 2005). One might add that employees will be grateful to their employer for the
benefit and also, might want to stay at least until they complete their schooling. Of course, this is a concern. Are employees staying on just for the reimbursement? This does
not seem to be the case, but even it if is, it is likely that the employee is adding value to the firm or he or she would have been
fired some time ago. In general, one study demonstrates that tuition benefits have increased or remained stable during the past five years, something significant in todays unstable employment climate
