warns consumers of the adverse impact smoking has on the human body and on fetuses, which can result in premature births, low birth weights, and even death. All of the major tobacco companies are required by law to provide statistical information on the harmful effects of smoking. Yet, one out of every four Americans, especially teens and young adults, continue to smoke (How Does Smoking Start, 2002). Why? Maybe it is because smoking has always been a kind of status symbol, or the synonymous of being cool and rebelling against authority. Anyone who thinks smoking is cool should walk through a hospitals intensive care unit sometime, and watch and listen to people fighting for every breath because, more often than not, they began smoking at an early age. Not only should people quit smoking, they should never start in the first place. Lets consider some of the latest findings published by the Surgeon General. First, smoking can cause heart disease, most forms of cancer, pneumonia, chronic bronchitis, asthma, and stroke (The Health Consequences of Smoking on the Human Body, 2004). It weakens immunities and makes bodies much more susceptible to infection and respiratory problems (The Health Consequences of Smoking on the Human Body, 2004). Smoking not only shortens a persons life, but it significantly reduces the quality of that life. One out of every four people who die in the United States can be attributed to smoking, with more than 1,500 people dying every day as a result of a smoking-related illness (The Health Consequences of Smoking on the Human Body, 2004).
