greed. Some may wonder whether or not this is a gender issue. After all, when examining the news, the men are put behind bars. The exceptions-Martha Stewart, Leona Helmsley-do gain
attention, but for the most part, the men are the ones who are involved in various schemes. Further, many feel that Martha was made an example and really did not
do anything to deserve a prison sentence. A student asks whether or not women in management have a more difficult time conforming to corporate illegal behavior than men. The answer
seems to be a resounding yes. Women are less likely to engage in this criminal type of activity. In part, this is due to the fact that women are different,
but it also has to do with the social construction of work. There have been no known instances of corporate illegal behavior amongst women at the top (Clinard & Yaeger,
2006). Of course, this fact is indicative of discrimination at the very top levels of management (Clinard & Yaeger, 2006). On some level, because women had to overcome barriers to
get to high positions, they do not want to ruin the chances of up and coming female candidates by demonstrating incompetence (Zimmerli, Richter & Holzinger, 2007). One could argue that
they may also be less inclined to cheat and steal because they are role models at this juncture in time. Also, they have not been a part of the Good
Old Boys network and so are not entrenched in illegal areas as are many men. It does seem to be the case that womens ethics are a bit different than
it is for their male counterparts. This is because women have been subordinate for some time, and so it is natural that women will have a different approach to ethics
