ideals as they did once before. Indeed, the problem persists now into the twenty-first century. Why does the world hate Western civilization, with an emphasis on the United States? It
seems that much of the morality that the west enveloped has been lost to commercialism and globalization. There are many critics of the success of western society and it is
suggested that something very important has been lost. Many are familiar with these complaints. After the September 11th attacks, the world found out that the Islamic world was displeased
with the immorality to emanate from the U.S. This article addresses the very issue, noting that the primary characteristics of the Western enemy according to Osama bin Laden, or
other Islamic extremists, are things such as materialism, liberalism, capitalism, humanism, rationalism, individualism, decadence, and moral laxity (Margalit & Buruma , 2002). The article goes on to note
that war against the West is in part "a war against a particular concept of citizenship and community" (Margalit & Buruma , 2002, p.PG). The author explains that the things
