Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the most respected and influential black leaders of all time. He
wrote and spoke extensively, calling on blacks and whites alike to end segregation and the various injustices to which society condemned blacks. One of his most notable writings is
"Why We Cant Wait". Widely read for decades, this book is indeed one of the most influential of Dr. Kings works. Indeed, it is considered one of the
most important works of non-fiction of the Twentieth Century. The success of this book is directly attributable to Dr. Kings choice of content and even the words which he
chooses to illuminate his subject. These words and the manner in which he employs balance and symmetry in presenting his cause makes "Why We Cant Wait" one of the
most captivating books of all time. The most obvious interplay of balance and symmetry is between the title of the book itself and Dr. Kings obvious strategy of timing
and patience. "Why We Cant Wait" outlines the strategy behind one of Dr. Kings most publicized achievements, the Birmingham Bus Boycott in which
hundreds of blacks practically shut down the bus system by their non-violent boycott of its services. Eight years had elapsed between the triumph of the boycotts in Montgomery and
the confrontation of the situation in Birmingham but Dr. King chose his time and place well. Indeed, much of the success of the civil rights movement in general and
