She was upset because her mother was ill and might have even been critically ill. She dialed 911 but the operator simply chastised her for her language. When she went to the police station, the 911 operator had her arrested. There seems to be little tolerance of foul language today, and there is also little tolerance of normal teen behavior. In this case, the girl did nothing wrong. The operator perceived her actions as unbecoming and hung up on the distraught young woman. The operator was later suspended, but the case brings up a startling point. Todays society is less tolerant of teenage behavior than ever before. They point fingers and say that the youth is violent, but the truth is that this is not the case. People have always been violent and little has changed during the past several decades. That said, for several years around the millennium, people were horrified at the rash of school shootings. Columbine was an eye-opener. Nichols & Good (2004) write: "Following Columbine, the press more frequently documented instances of harassment and bullying in schools" (p.58). These incidents did die down with the advent of tough laws and new district policies that made it less likely students would sneak in with weaponry. Perhaps the primary reason why violence has calmed down is due to awareness. If the odd student is not acting right, a call to the local police will be made. Many attacks have been prevented due to student vigilance. At the same time, such horrific events has caused people to take a second look at their children. Are todays teens truly more violent? II.
