Von Huben 4/2010 Please Introduction The short story "The Things They Carried" from the book of the same name is a moving account of a platoon of "grunts" in Vietnam. This paper discusses various aspects of the story and its meaning. Discussion What did they carry? In the actual physical sense, each man carried the things that were "determined by necessity," but that necessity varies from man to man (OBrien). Lt. Jimmy Cross, the platoon leader, carries a letter from his girlfriend Martha-or rather, the girl he wishes were his girlfriend, though he knows she doesnt love him (OBrien). Among the "necessities" the men carried were things like "P-38 can openers, pocket knives, [and] heat tabs" along with other similar personal items, which usually weighted between 15-20 pounds. Henry Dobbins load was heavier because he was a big guy and carried extra rations; and Dave Jensen, who wanted to try and remain clean, carried "several hotel-size bars of soap hed stolen on R&R in Sydney, Australia" (OBrien). Ted Lavender carried tranquilizers because he was scared, at least until he was shot in the head on his way back from peeing: "zapped while zipping" (OBrien). They carry not only the personal gear, but the official issue, helmets, fatigue jackets, trousers and combat boots, the last weighting 2.1 pounds; and radios and ammo and weapons.
