paper will explain why Americans always considered Texas part of the West instead of the South. OUT IN THE WEST TEXAS TOWN OF EL PASO... In the early 1900s
people thought of the southern states as those that grew cotton, had antebellum mansions and that most of the inhabitants of those states were genteel southern folk who probably drank
mint juleps on their large verandahs. But it was the west that intrigued people the most - the west was full of dusty towns, wild saloons and cowboys that had
been herding cattle along the well-known cattle trails of the day. There were sheriffs and gunfights and wild horses, and the west was just generally thought of as an
exciting if not dangerous place to be. It was this latter definition into which Texas fit as neatly as the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle. Texas was home
to most of the cattle ranches and a large portion of the cattle drives either started or ended in Texas. Texas had of necessity a large population of cowboys
simply because it was one of the nations most important cattle producing states. This was not a state that caused people to think of the frail southern belle
in her hoop skirts and fan. People were far more likely to think of the risqu? saloon girls belting back shots of whiskey and the wild roar of the
Texas crowd in a saloon on a Saturday night. Correct or not, this was the image that people most held in their hearts when they thought about Texas.
