South Carolina used it on a 75 year old woman in a nursing home and in Florida, officers used it on a twelve year old truant (2005). Of course, these
incidents really say nothing about the validity of taser as a good alternative to stronger weaponry but rather demonstrate poor judgment on the part of a couple of officers. This
may come from poor training. However, an officer carries deadly weapons. Taking tasers away from them will likely not result in fewer problem incidents. Rather, if they do not have
the stun gun to subdue suspects, they may have to resort to more dangerous alternatives. At the same time, there have been reports of stun gun deaths. Several newspapers have
reported that the Taser gun may not be safe and linked eleven deaths in addition to several injuries to its use ("Risks," 2005). While the article does not say
explicitly to what the deaths were attributable, one may surmise that the few deaths might not be directly related to the use of the stun gun. Often, suspects die in
police custody due to the fact that they had been taking drugs or are simply very upset and have a fatal asthma or heart attack. The use of the stun
gun might add to the problem. However, studies on these guns suggest that they are not quite as dangerous as the media makes them out to be. The Defense
Department did research into these types of guns and believes them to be rather reliable in respect to detaining a subject and using the least amount of physical force, thereby
providing the least amount of risk to the subject or officer ("Risks," 2005). In other words, as compared with other methods of detention, taser guns work best and are safest.
