soldiers today need higher education than in the past. Discussion The simple answer is that soldiers have to change because warfare changes. This has always been true; perhaps the
starkest example of the havoc created in these circumstances is the American Civil War. It was fought with tactics that had been familiar for centuries from the European experience of
war. While that might have worked in Revolutionary War times, by the 1860s developments in such things as weapons meant that the tactics had to change. Commanders who didnt learn
that lesson saw their regiments cut to ribbons by weapons fire theyd never seen before. It was suicide to march massed troops against enemy lines in the Civil War,
so the tactics changed. There was some trench warfare in the Civil War, but that particularly gruesome form of combat reached its full expression in World War I. When planes
and tanks made that untenable, soldiers became far more mobile, so that World War II saw a lot of mechanized infantry and another new tactic, amphibious landings. Throughout the centuries,
the form of battle and the men who fight it have evolved together. However, the military establishment has always stood apart, a specialized group of highly trained people who gather
together in fortifications barricaded against the enemy. Now that picture is changing, and changing quickly, because warfare is evolving once again. No longer will troops simply be occupiers who retreat
to a garrison stronghold, remaining aloof and threatening to indigenous people; they are now expected to become a part of the community, or at least approach them with understanding and
interest. At McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey, airmen are taking classes in such subjects as Eastern philosophy, history, sociology and foreign languages so that they will be better
