and encourages the continuance of a dangerous habit. Obviously, people who smoke realize that what they are doing is damaging. They may have started smoking when they were very young
and have had a hard time quitting. In fact, at least 80 percent of smokers started as minors (Rizzo, 2002). Such teenagers, after smoking for a few years, realize that
the cost of smoking is greater than its benefits. Yet, people continue to smoke due to the addictive nature of tobacco. On some level, there must be sympathy for the
smoker who needs a fix. On the other hand, there are now products such as nicotine gum and patches that can get smokers through the day without lighting up and
bothering others. Of course, to use such products, they need to make a commitment to abstinence. At the same time, in this day and age, there is no excuse for
not stopping the dangerous habit. The primary reason for banning smokers from engaging in their habit in public is due to the fear that second hand smoke is dangerous. Second
hand smoke in fact is a heated issue. There are people who believe that the smoke they breath in through cigarette smoke that goes into the air will harm them.
Some take it so far as to want to ban cigarette smoking in outdoor parks for example, but usually, the attention is to the litter that the cigarettes provide. There
is no real reason to worry about second hand smoke in the outdoors, but of course, as an environmental issue, smoke in general is harmful. Of course, those who claim
