Smart Executives Fail . The author is widely published, well respected and spends a great deal of time as a public speaker. His basic inquiry in this particular volume has to do with the fact that so many well known executives, who have been deemed brilliant, suddenly become embroiled in business fiascos that have been viewed as larger than life. Some authors focus on success and how to duplicate such programs. This book focuses on failures and what can be learned from them. Finkelsteins investigation is exemplary and the author is certainly well qualified to write this book as it embraces a subject for which he is considered an expert in the field. The book is broken down into eleven chapters, the first of which explores corporate mistakes. He explains that his goal in his six year investigation had always been to find out exactly why some businesses fail. Many executives take chances and win big, but other executives fail. Is it just a crap shoot, or are there reasons for the failure? This was the authors primary focus when the investigation began. Just why did good people fail and what can be learned from those failures? Indeed, an important reason for the book is to help others avoid committing similar errors. The book focuses on a variety of firms which are mostly American companies but also delves into several foreign ones. Some firms that are evaluated in this book are Coca Cola, Worldcom, Enron and Nissan. There are a variety of firms included and while those mentioned are large corporations, there are smaller ones evaluated as well.
