couples do live the same way as heterosexual couples do and so they should have the opportunity to sanction their relationships. They live together and have sexual relations only with
one another when in a committed relationship. Some even become parents, raising the children with their significant other. The fact that homosexuals can be in such relationships without benefit of
marriage attests to the prejudice that society embraces. After all, there are laws prohibiting discrimination due to sexual orientation. Why then is discrimination allowed when it involves gay unions?
Although it seems to be the case that gay people should be allowed to marry, there are several arguments against homosexual marriage. The prohibitionist argument is biblical in nature (Wilson,
1996). This of course is an obvious argument as throughout the bible, homosexuality is considered a sin. There is controversy here as well but that indeed is the premise of
Americas religious right argument. While the religious right condemns homosexuality, Christian churches have been formed with gay preachers leading their congregations. There are in fact gay churches with gay preachers
and while not unheard of, such practices remain controversial. Still, mainstream religion does have a problem with the concept of gay marriage. Not only are Christians against
the idea that the sacrament of marriage be allowed for homosexuals, but the issue also permeates Jewish law. Aaron Gross (1996) asks "Should the state be required to support as
well as legally grant rights and privileges to every consensual arrangement between two adults? What if a brother and sister decide to marry? Why not a father with
