slavery (Pleming PG). U.S. national security adviser Condoleezza Rice on the other hand, merely called slavery "Americas birth defect," but did not think that compensation is necessary (PG). She said:
"I think reparations, given the fact that there is plenty of blame to go around for slavery, plenty of blame to go around among African and Arab states and plenty
of blame to go around among Western states, we are better to look forward and not point fingers backward" (PG). It is true that slavery that took place
centuries ago was wrong, and no one suggests that it is somehow justifiable, but today, reparations are asked for in order to mend the pain and suffering that happened long
ago. Yet, one has to ask whether or not they are entitled to something that occurred so long ago, something that does not affect them in todays world of equality
where opportunity is boundless for blacks and whites alike. While each side has a point, it seems that reparations to African Americans for their ancestors pain is a bad
idea. This is true despite the fact that reparations had been paid to Holocaust survivors and japanese Americans who experienced the internment during WWII. In part, the reason why one
group should be compensated and the other not, is really due to timing. Some people who fought in World War II are still alive today, and certainly they have living
children or grandchildren. Yet, the African American slaves hardly affect the present generation. While that is the case, it pays to take a look at the history of slavery.
