People commit crimes for a diversity of reasons. A considerable body of research has been devoted to explaining those reasons.
Criminologists, sociologists, and even psychologists often agree that specific factors in the lives of an individual determine their propensity to commit a crime. Among the more notable theories that
have resulted is the rational choice theory (which covers the factors relating not only to deterrence but also to the potential rewards that are inherent in committing a crime).
According to the Rational Choice theory criminals commit crimes because they rationalize out the plusses and minuses of their actions. The
rational choice theory contends that when the negatives outweigh the positives (from the criminals perspective) the criminal abstains from the criminal activity. There are, of course, a number of
factors that would fall into the negative category from the criminals perspective. One of these factors involves the likelihood that the individual that they are attempting to rob would
themselves have a weapon. One has to only look at the armed robbery statistics of states that allow or even encourage an armed citizenry and comparing that to the
armed robbery statistics of states where guns are illegal. When the rate of burglaries in Texas is compared to the rate of burglaries in Massachusetts, the result is shocking.
